The sheer marketing blitz, the hype and hoopla along with the excellent product that the Firefox development team has come up with has created a new first. Geeky it may sound, well who cares!!
Firefox v3 has managed to be downloaded approximately 8 million times. Oooh la la!! This turns out to be the first attempt of its kind and is going to take some grinding to beat it for years to come.
With a rising market share, currently around 18% and a well planned marketing plan, we are soon going to see Firefox as the browser of choice for millions around the world.

I have downloaded my piece of memorabilia for my future generations to be proud of...:)

Firefox 3 is out!!!

Wednesday, June 18, 2008

Download Day - English
JUNE is getting hotter day by day.

Finallly the wait is over, the mother of all browsers is out( i can see some people making faces..:)). Mozilla foundation has released its most advanced browser to date, Firefox v3. According to the developers, their claims to fame are:

  • based on the updated Gecko 1.9 engine.
  • Malware Protection.
  • New SSL error pages.
  • Anti-virus integration, etc
  • Automated cycle collector, a new memory allocator reduces fragmentation.
  • A user's bookmarks, history, cookies, and preferences are now stored in a transactionally secure database format
for details, click here and here

The new firefox is certainly alot crispier with a new and improved addons management system and a completely new bag of preloaded plugins( which has increased the package size by roughly 40%). 7.14 mb vs. 5.75 mb, not a bad bargain as i don't have to scout for the different plugins.

And as always, it has managed to learn a trick or two from the birth place of browser innovation, OPERA. The inline search feature has now been integrated ( read copied ) into FF v3 which i think is a good thing as it just provides the user a much more better web experience. I hope no litigations will follow suit!!!

Currently most addons are not compatible with the new version but i am sure that its developer community will be burning the mid-night oil to tune their addons and help us all. GOD SPEED..:)

The race is certainly hotter now as Opera has recently released its flagship product, Opera v9.5 after due research and trials( and its wonderful). With inline search, faster load times, newer and better javascript engine, it is certainly poised to shift some traditional loyalties.

I am going to run some tests on both the browsers( forget IE v7 or v8 beta 1..or for that matter any other IE version, it will always be bloated and vulnerable.) and will soon come out with the final verdict as far as i m concerned. But I'm sure, whatever be the verdict, there are all winners in this battle of browsers.

Opera 9.5

Opera 9.5 is out!!!
Opera is a pioneer in innovativeness. Its rumoured that their inline search feature will be incorporated in Firefox v3 as well as the ubiquitous tab feature which is a part of opera's legacy.

What a wonderful product this is...lightening fast, inline search( remember those times when you kept wondering what was the first alphabet of the site url that you wish to visit again??). No more of such pain in the a** thoughts, thanks to the inline search feature.

Although opera is a standout browser( the only browser to pass the Acid 2 browser test which other market leader browsers failed miserably), there are certain things which put it down:

  • How many of us rise up to Google and think of it as the real saviour in this world of propreity software which actually sucks?? Or trust its database and servers more than our own computer's hard disks? A lot of us do and thats the problem.
  • Its so deeply ingrained in our lives( orkut-social networking, gmail-email, google reader-rss feeds, calendar and ofcourse searching the whole mad world of the internet....but google support for opera has been less than satisfying. You cannot enjoy the new gmail on opera and it lacks the punch in interface design. You cannot edit documents or spreadsheets still which is a great plus in firefox and IE.
  • The lesser number people using opera means a lot smaller developer community which certainly a plus with firefox( 5000+ addons). I personally use 17 addons, will publish a list soon..:) but none on opera.
opera has a lot of catching up to do in terms of google support and the developer community to be able to increase its market share and set standards for the web development. Best of luck OPERA.

solution to the the BX error in blogger

Monday, June 16, 2008

I have been at the recieving end of the common BX-_____ problem with my blog failing to update or upload the previously working template. (thank god i made a backup..:)).A lot of search and trail and error resulted in my miseries ending, much to my bewilderment. Don't know how and why it works and why google/ blogger have failed to recognize such simple tricks. But still that doesnt reduce its efficacy..

follow the steps: for firefox

  1. open tools>options
  2. open the privacy tab
  3. then towards the bottom click on the Clear Now button, a dialog box will pop up asking you what all do you want to delete eg. cookies, cache, browsing history etc.
  4. make sure you select cookies and cache in this case..rest is optional
  5. click clear private data now.

to bypass all these steps: just press Ctrl+Shift+delete and you will jump to step 4.
